E-Verify Extended through September 30, 2009

On Wednesday, March 11, President Obama signed an omnibus appropriations bill that extends funding for the federal E-Verify program through the end of this fiscal year, Sept. 30, 2009. An amendment to the bill that would have extended E-Verify through 2014 was tabled by the Senate in a 50-47 vote.

E-Verify is a federal program that allows employers to check the work status of new hires online by comparing information from an employee's I-9 form against Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security databases. Certain federal contractors are required to use the program effective May 21, 2009, and several states require specific employers to use the program.
