Washington Driving Record Abstracts to be Available to Employers Beginning July 26
Effective July 26, 2009, the state of Washington will allow employers to receive a driving record abstract for employment purposes. Senate Bill 5610, signed into law by Governor Christine Gregoire in April, amends RCW 46.52.130 to allow a certified abstract of the driving record to be furnished to:
“An employer or prospective employer or volunteer organization, or an agent acting on behalf of an employer or prospective employer or volunteer organization, for employment purposes related to driving by an individual as a condition of that individual's employment or otherwise at the direction of the employer or organization.”
Prior to July 26, 2009, driving abstracts were available to employers of commercial vehicle drivers or school bus drivers only. Written consent is still required in order to perform Washington driving record checks and the state fee for such checks remains $10.
